On February 10, 2011, Vanessa DaSilva, Ms. Pam, and I introduced a Robotics unit to 18 of Ms. Vanessa’s students at Flemming Elementary School. During the double period, students learned to define a robot, about logical sequencing, how to program a robot, and how to troubleshoot problems. From a teacher’s perspective, they also learned to manipulate technology, they learned to cooperate as a team, and they had fun. The class used the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kit for their lessons and can be seen in the accompanying photo with their robots.
On May 25, I had another opportunity to visit the class as a follow-up to our introduction to robotics. It was great to work with Ms. DaSilva’s students again and I wish them continued success in their robotics explorations. Perhaps someday soon their will be a few engineers from among the ranks of Flemming Elementary Schools’ students?
